How many links should a website have to rank well?

So how many links should your website have to rank well? That depends on your niche and level of competition.

In general, the more links you have to your site, the higher it will rank. The average number of backlinks needed for a website is about 30-40. That doesn’t mean that websites with fewer than 30 are doomed to fail or those with over 40 can stop marketing their sites. In reality, all search engines use many factors in ranking a site.

For Example, in our niche (outsourcing) many of the high-ranking sites have between 2000 to 4000 backlinks ranging from DA40 to DA90, this tells me that to compete with those sites I need to match or beat them in these areas.

Your niche may only require 300 to 800 quality links to be competitive or if you’re competing with an extremely popular site (like Forbes) you may need 100,000 quality backlinks. 

Do research, compare with your competitors, and base your efforts on what you find.

One of the most important factors is how many times your site or relevant pages on that site are visited by people from all over the world. This factor takes into account not only backlinks but also social media posts and other ways in which people mention you online. One way to increase visits to your website is through content marketing.
